The Fallacy of the Soul Mate

Soul Mates? Who said anything about that?

First of all, it's not biblical. "Soul Mate" was a Greek Mythological Concept. Certain of the Ancient Greeks believed that human beings actually had "dual natures" but some cataclysm that occured before recorded history split all humans in half. Therefore, one of the goals in life is to locate that person... your "soul mate" from whence you were cloven from way back in the Primeival Mists of Time... and of course, hook up with them.

The thing is, the Greeks figured two guys could be soulmates, and in rare cases a human and an animal (yes, they were into that sometimes). Often, it could be an adult man and a prepubescent boy, as the Greeks (and the Post-Republic Romans) believed that 12 year old boys were the absolute height of eroticism.

So... what do those stoopid Classical Greeks know? Squat, that's what!

Biblically, it was always a matter of simple compatability. For instance, the story of how Isaac hooked up with (Rachel, I believe it was). Isaac's servant went to the well to get some water, and she offered him some water and he thought to himself, "say, this girl would make a pretty good wife for Isaac." So he brought her back to him, and there ya go.

Also, "soul mate" falls into the "Fatalism" trap that many Christians fall into. This happens a lot at Bible Colleges, from what I'm told. "Oh, but she HAS to be the one that God has for me! I love her SO much! She just HAS to be!" And when it ends (and badly), "well, I guess I was mistaken, God must have someone else for me." Yah right, bub! Maybe you and her weren't "clicking" from the get-go?

Another example of Fatalism: "My grandma was meant to die of Lung Cancer after chainsmoking for 40 years" or "Jorge was meant to get shot in that drive-by." The idea that everything is predetermined isn't really Biblical... exept in terms of Revelation and Prophecy and stuff like that. But until a legitimate prophet by the Spirit out-and-out pronounces that you and whats-her-face should get married, don't go thinking
